The original song is by someone named P.F. Sloan and the definitive version was sung by Barry McGuire. That went to #2 in 1965. Justin and I were first introduced to the song by the Dickies, a British first-wave punk band. We liked the chorus but thought the verse was outdated and clunky besides, so we wrote something that fit our times a little better. This was Fall 2001 or early 2002.
