Somewhat true. I like the demo of "Rain" so much that it did keep me from enjoying the new version. It's a shame, because the album version of it is really quite good. However, I have to say that the situation with songs like "Corazon" is that they made the songs worse.

I feel like "Corazon" is the only song where the album version is significantly worse than the EP version. "Butterfly Nets" is so much better on the album, I couldn't stand the EP version.
I'm little concerned that people buying the album who haven't heard all the EPs are going to be somehow cheated out of the better versions of some of songs, is this just me?

i don't know. i think a lot of your attachment to the ep versions of the songs is like mine--emotional. it's not that those versions are empirically better (this is art after all) but that you think they're better because you heard them before the broken string versions, and because you have a connection with them. being a fan of bishop allen during 2006 was a seriously awesome experience. it was so much fun. i've seldom had more fun as a fan of a band over a span of time as i did last year with bishop allen. that's why the ep versions of those songs sound so good to me.

i imagine that once the broken string comes out and gains some traction, and the band gets some new fans, and those new fans look backward to hear the ep versions of the songs that they came to know and love as a result of the broken sting, most of those new fans will say something like "man these eps are great but i really just love the versions of these songs that are on the broken string, the eps are sort of like demo versions and don't have the sparkle that the broken string has."

they'll basically just have the opposite reaction that you and i and a lot of the older fans are having.

i don't think corazon is worse at all. i think the broken string works pretty well. the main thing is that it's a fantastic song in and of itself, the melody is great and the lyrics are too, and, probably most importantly and the reason it's getting a bad rap from fans who followed last year, it was the very first song released from the project. of course it has a strong emotional connection.

the real disappointment about the album is that they didn't include 'the same fire.' the evidence can be found by listening to the daytrotter version, which is just amazing. but if they'd left that off they'd have had to leave something else off. so whatever. broken string is really great. i'm excited to buy it properly.
