The perspective in the picture doesn't really do them justice; they're about a 1/4 of an inch thick, like a little booklet, and the CD tray reenforces and protects the whole thing.

The reason they're better than jewel cases:

(1) there's no plastic outside case to crack or scratch.
(2) there's more room for nice artwork
(3) the thing is all one nice heavy-cardboard whole, not a bunch of snap-together parts, so it's just more elegant and pleasant to hold.
