To get songs on iTunes, most bands go through a service like CDBaby or the Orchard and sign up for their digital distribution component.

It is not well known, but if you dig through the Apple site, you can, as an independent artist, submit your own songs without an intermediary company. It is unknown to me how rigid the application process is, nor how hard it is to get listed on the site.

I imagine that BA would have an easier time being accepted directly because they have a sales history behind them. Whereas, my old band (which probably sold less than 50 CDs during our existence) would probably have a harder time.
